Hot, Flat, and Crowded

Jim Johnson rates “Hot, Flat, and Crowded” 3 out of 5 butterflies. Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution--and How It Can Renew America was written by Thomas L. Friedman. This is a follow-up to Friedman's book; the World is Flat. In Hot, Flat, and Crowded, he centers on how the flat world is causing greater pollution by the ever-expanding rising standard of living by the advent of global business centers. He calls on the United States to take the lead in reducing global pollution and increasing green technology, not only through government intervention, but also through innovation. He believes that the U.S. can not only reduce global warming through innovation, but also establish itself as the world leader in supplying the green technology and products to the rest of the world. Basically, this book is a sales pitch to get the United States to focus on reducing oil consumption using current and new green renewable technologies. It is a good pitch and an effective story. For the IT person, the takeaway is to find ways he or she can promote and deal with new technologies that offer greater efficiency and reduced waste. For the project manager, project waste should always be a target for improvement and such reduction often will lead to greater efficiency.
